    How First Responders Can Fix Their Sleep on Shift Work (Without Quitting the Job)


    You finished a 24-hour shift. It’s 8 AM, the sun is blazing through your windshield, and you have to be back in 48 hours. You get home, collapse, and wake up four hours later feeling worse than when you laid down. You’ve been doing this for 12 years. Your doctor says your bloodwork looks fine.

    Why Shift Work Hits First Responders Differently

    Most sleep hygiene advice was written for people who wake up at 7 AM and go to bed at 10 PM. That’s not your life. Police officers, firefighters, and dispatchers face rotating shifts, overnight calls, and irregular sleep windows that actively fight your body’s natural circadian rhythm — the 24-hour internal clock driven by light exposure and cortisol timing.
